What is OutsideDB?

OutsideDB is an independent data platform built for backcountry skiers, snowboarders, and outdoor enthusiasts who want real-time, science-based conditions data before heading into the mountains. Based in Missoula, Montana, OutsideDB was built by someone who spends time in the backcountry and got tired of piecing together data from a dozen different sources before every trip.

The flagship product is SnowDB — a live snow conditions dashboard monitoring 800+ SNOTEL stations across the United States and 100+ snow stations in British Columbia, updated hourly with snowpack depth, snow water equivalent, accumulation, temperature, and 7-day NWS forecasts.

About This Blog

The OutsideDB Blog covers snow science, SNOTEL data interpretation, and backcountry trip planning analytics. Our goal is to help backcountry travelers understand the data behind conditions reports — not just what the numbers say, but what they mean for decision-making in the field.

Articles reference data from trusted government sources including the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the National Weather Service (NWS), and the USDA Climate Hubs.

Data Sources

SnowDB pulls from the following authoritative sources:

USDA NRCS SNOTEL Network — automated snowpack telemetry across the western US, accessed via the AWDB API. National Weather Service (NWS) — point forecasts for each SNOTEL station location. BC Government Snow Stations — snowpack monitoring stations operated by the Province of British Columbia.
